NorCal Betans to celebrate community Thanksgiving
Nov 15, 2006

For the first time in its 17-year-history, the Beta Sigma Fraternity Northern California Chapter will get involve in supporting a Bay Area community.

In line with one of the fraternity’s objectives to be a socially conscious organization not only in the Philippines, but also here in the United States, Grand Princep Dennis Abayan announced that on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, frat members and their families will join the San Francisco Canon Kip House in serving food to the needy seniors of San Francisco.

The Canon Kip House is a center that provides day nursery, recreational facility, and medical and dental services to deserving residents in the neighborhood.

The NorCal Beta Sigma is composed of fraternity members from different schools and universities in the Philippines who migrated to the United States particularly in Northern California. Since it was organized in 1989, the fraternity has pursued projects to help disadvantaged people.

Among its recent project was the “Libro Para Kay Pedro,” a continuing project where members solicit and donate used textbooks for a mobile library. This library goes to different barrios in Lipa City, Batangas.

The fraternity also sponsored the “Service to Humanity” held last October 14-15, 2006 in Laoag City. This mission provided free medical and dental services to over 2000 disadvantaged residents of that City. In addition, the fraternity provides scholarship to seven deserving students in the Philippines. Four are enrolled at La Salle High School in Lipa City, one at FEU Arts in Metro Manila, and two high school scholars in Cagayan De Oro City.

The NorCal Beta Sigma Fraternity is a major supporter of the various medical and other social projects of its counterparts in the Philippines. Among them are the Beta Sigma “Medical Caravan”, a mobile clinic that travels to several distressed parts of the country offering medical and dental services at no cost to those in need; “Folkways”, a free musical concert organized by the fraternity’s UP Diliman chapter. It provides aspiring singers an opportunity to showcase their musical talents to a bigger audience.

To finance its various projects, the fraternity holds fund raising events such as its annual golf tournament, garage sales, pennies to share, recycling program, and from the invaluable support of the members, their families and friends.
